Arthunkal Police Station: India’s First BIS-ISO Certified Station

The Arthunkal Police Station in Alappuzha, Kerala, has made history by becoming the first police station in India to receive the IS/ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System (QMS) certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

2. The “Modernised Cherthala Police” Programme

This certification is a primary outcome of the Modernised Cherthala Police Programme, a reform initiative aimed at elevating policing standards in the Cherthala subdivision.

    • Efficiency: Implementing an efficient petition management system with 95% compliance within 15 days.
    • Digitisation: Transitioning to paperless administration, saving approximately 50,000 sheets of paper monthly.
    • Decongestion: Removal of over 400 obsolete items and disposal of unclaimed vehicles to create a better workspace.
    • Infrastructure: Waterproofing, repainting, and creating a citizen-friendly environment.

The BIS awarded the certification after a rigorous two-stage audit that evaluated the station on several “SMART” policing parameters:

Note: Other stations under the same initiative, such as Pattanakkad and Muhamma, also received ISO certifications in early 2025, but Arthunkal is the first to be formally recognized by the BIS specifically.
