Prime Minister Narendra Modiโ€™s visit to Amman resulted in the signing of five key agreements aimed at expanding cooperation in modern, strategic, and cultural sectors.

1. Economic Targets

  • Trade Goal: PM Modi proposed enhancing bilateral trade to US$5 billion over the next five years (up from approximately US$2.8 billion).
  • Fertiliser Pillar: India is one of Jordan’s largest buyers of Phosphates and Potash fertilisers. The leaders discussed increasing investment in Jordan for fertiliser production (e.g., the existing Jordan India Fertiliser Company – JIFCO).
  • Digital Finance: Call for collaboration between Jordan’s payment systems and India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

2. Alignment with Indian Global Initiatives

Jordan expressed its intent to join major India-led global platforms, marking a significant diplomatic win for India:

  • International Solar Alliance (ISA)
  • Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA)
  • Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI)

3. Capacity Building

  • India announced its support for the Indiaโ€“Jordan Centre of Excellence at Al Hussein Technical University in Amman, which involves training master trainers in digital and technical skills.

4. Diplomatic Significance

  • 75th Anniversary: The visit coincided with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
  • First Full Visit: This was PM Modi’s first full-fledged bilateral visit to Jordan, which hadn’t hosted an Indian PM for a full bilateral visit in 37 years.
  • Regional Security: Both leaders reiterated a united stand against terrorism and extremism and discussed regional developments, including the situation in Gaza.
