India’s First Agri-Drone Indigenisation Hub in Chennai

Key Highlights

  • Agri-Drone Indigenisation Facility: The 35,000 sq. ft. facility is the country’s first hub for the design, manufacturing, and testing of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) for agriculture.1 It aims to manufacture 1 lakh drones by 2026 and locally produce seven drone subsystems and 33 parts, supporting the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) vision.2
  • Centres of Excellence (CoEs): 300 CoEs were launched across India in collaboration with academic institutions and industry partners.3 These centers will promote drone innovation, research and development, and also serve as after-sales support and training grounds for future drone pilots.4
  • Train the Trainer (TTT) Programme: This is a DGCA-approved certified skilling program designed to empower experienced drone pilots and aviation professionals to become certified instructors.5 The TTT program focuses on hands-on instruction in UAS operation, safety, and maintenance, ensuring a skilled workforce for the expanding drone industry, notably empowering women through the ‘Drone Didi’ scheme.6

This launch is seen as a transformative moment for India’s drone industry, strengthening its manufacturing capabilities and boosting rural employability, particularly in precision agriculture.7
