This project is a massive step toward establishing India as a global leader in green hydrogen.
- Location: Pudimadaka, near Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
- Investment: Approximately ₹1.85 lakh crore ($22 billion).
- Capacity:
- Planned Green Hydrogen production of 1,500 tonnes per day (TPD).
- Planned production of 7,500 TPD of derivatives (Green Methanol, Green Urea, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel).
- Renewable Energy Integration: It plans to integrate up to 20 GW of renewable energy capacity to power hydrogen production.
- Developers: A joint effort between NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), the green arm of NTPC, and NREDCAP (New & Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Ltd.).
- Goal: To serve as a world-class, one-stop ecosystem for green chemicals and sustainable manufacturing, with a focus on exports to markets like Europe and Asia.
- Green Hydrogen is produced by splitting water using renewable electricity (electrolysis), making it a clean, carbon-free fuel.
🇮🇳 National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM)
The Pudimadaka hub is the first major project under India’s overarching strategy for the sector.
- Overarching Objective: To make India the Global Hub for the production, usage, and export of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives.
- Mission Outlay: The Mission has an initial outlay of ₹19,744 crore.
- Targets by 2030:
- Develop a Green Hydrogen production capacity of at least 5 Million Metric Tonne (MMT) per annum.
- Add about 125 GW of associated renewable energy capacity.
- Attract over ₹8 lakh crore in total investments.
- Abate nearly 50 MMT of annual greenhouse gas emissions.
🌟 Key Pillars of the Mission
The NGHM focuses on four main areas to achieve its targets:
- Demand Creation: Mandating the use of green hydrogen in sectors like refining and fertiliser production.
- Supply-Side Incentives: Financial incentives for manufacturing electrolysers and producing green hydrogen (SIGHT Programme).
- Infrastructure: Identifying and developing Green Hydrogen Hubs (like Pudimadaka) and supporting supply chain development.
- R&D and Skill Development: Promoting innovation and building the workforce for the new industry.
